"Why Guns Should Not Be Taken Away From People"

A speech by 10-year old 4th grade student Alia Stewart for a class writing project, the subject of which was: "Write a short speech about a concern you have or a law you think we need"

Ed. Note: It is somewhat unsettling to examine that assignment and think that the unstated intent is to acclimate our children to the idea that whatever problems arise, the solution lies in passing ever more laws.

"I'm going to tell you why I think guns should not be banned."

"Guns should not be banned because we protect ourselves with them. If some natural disaster like a flash flood happens, and we need to leave to the mountains, what will we hunt with?"

"If guns are banned what would police officers and shopkeepers defend themselves with? What about the bankers? What if someone smuggled a gun to rob homes with?"

"What if you were the victim?"

"We need defense!"

"Plus every citizen has a right to keep and bear arms according to the Constitution."

"Thank you."

Ed. Note: From the mouths of babes....
