SB 6479 - School Protection Act of 2002 End School Shootings in Washington State |
|
UPDATE: Jan. 31, 2002 Next Friday is the final week bills may be considered by their original (policy) committee. 5 p.m., February 8th is the cut-off. SB 6479 is NOT scheduled for a hearing at this time. If you want your voice to be heard, THERE IS NO TIME TO WASTE. Will SB 6479 really end school shootings in Washington? No, there is no way to end violence in our schools, or anywhere else. But the facts show that armed defense makes school shootings far less likely to occur and far less damaging when they do occur. If enacted, SB 6479 would allow educators to carry concealed firearms on school facilities in the state of Washington. After five years, it would extend to all CPL holders. The bill was written by Kevin Schmadeka, WSTRT member and director of the Freedom Restoration Project and introduced in the Senate by Senator Harold Hochstatter. SB 6479 has been referred to the Education Committee where it is being held in purgatory by committee chair, Senator Rosemary McAuliffe. Senator McAuliffe refuses to allow a hearing on SB 6479. ACTION NEEDED: We are asking everyone to call, fax and email members of the Senate Education Committee, their own senators, as well as Senator McAuliffe herself, to appeal to them to give SB 6479 a hearing. Time is short. Unless the bill receives a hearing by February 8th, it will die in committee. Below, you will find links to the text of SB 6479, some background information and an open letter to Senator McAuliffe from Kevin Schmadeka. There are plenty of talking points to be found in the letter and background info. Take the time , especially, to read Kevin's letter to Sen. McAuliffe. It is worth every minute it takes to read. SB 6479 will do more than provide protection for our schools; it will restore some of the rights which have been suppressed by our government. It is a much needed step in the right direction. Please take action today. |
