Protest Tips

Dress comfortably, shoes especially.

Share the ride when you can.

Arrive early to give yourself a chance to talk with fellow protesters and finalize the plan of action before the event gets under way. But remember, better late than never.

Signs (See: Code of Conduct)

  • Two pieces of 20"x30" poster board ($3.19 per pack of 10 at Office Depot) stapled to either side of a four-foot piece of lattice (48¢ at Home Depot) makes a nice, lightweight 2-sided sign.
  • Foam-core board (available at most office supply stores) makes a great backer, it's light but doesn't bend in the wind.
  • For rain, if you cover your sign with plastic from a painter's drop cloth and tape the edges with clear packing tape, it'll last a long time.
  • Keep the message simple, more than 6 words on an 11"x17" sign is tough to read from more than 20 or 30 feet and will not show up on camera.
  • Black letters on a white background is the easiest to read. Other combos work but stay away from yellow, lime green and neon colors.
If you are looking for something to make a very professional, high-impact sign from, you may want to download one of Oleg Volk's posters. They are free for your use. On his site, there are a number of different sections (use the menu at the bottom of the page to navigate the sections), with various posters on a theme. To download a printable copy, select the image you want, click on the "Hi Res" link under that image, and then wait for the LARGE image to load. When it does, right-click on the image and select "Save Picture As".

You may need a copy of Poster (a FREE banner print program) to print these posters.
